Home Remedy for Head Lice

There is nothing like hearing of a “lice breakout” to put fear in the hearts of parents! |

Head lice treatment is never a fun and exciting time in anyone’s life. It is, however, pretty common. With the school season in full swing, you may have to deal with lice in your children’s school — but don’t panic. Lice spreads easily, and almost every elementary student has had (o will have) their head inspected by the school nurse. Prescription shampoos can be harmful to children, pregnant and nursing women. They contain lindane, which is highly toxic and can possibly be flammable if heat is applied afterwards, even with a blow dryer. Instead try the following:
Coat the hair (preferably wet) with half of this mixture, just before shampooing, comb hair with a regular comb, apply the other half of the mixture directly onto scalp. Again, comb hair section by section with a regular comb, from the scalp towards the end of the hair, beginning on the forehead and ending in the neck area. Cover with a fitted shower cap or wrap with plastic and leave it on for 2 to 3 hours. Rinse, shampoo and rinse again very well. Then comb the hair with a nit comb dipped in water and vinegar to comb dead lice and nits out. Repeat this treatment 7 days after the first one. It is also recommended that all bedding, towels and clothing be cleaned with soap and hot water and placed in a dryer for at least 20 minutes to help kill any remaining lice. Seal any exposed stuffed toys in a plastic bag and leave them for 10 days to allow all lice to die of starvation. Be sure to dispose of combs and hairbrushes and throw out any hair accessories. Thoroughly vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture. Pets cannot be infested with lice, so no precaution is needed. |
