The weather is starting to heat up; things are about to get HOT – are you and your hair ready? Sweltering days and sultry summer nights means numerous trips to the pool, weekend beach trips and activities that require hours under the sun’s rays. It seems the sky’s the limit during warmer months; brighter and lighter hair color, tousled textures and casual styles.

The goal is to find quick styles that will survive the effects of heat, humidity and sweat. The goal is to hydrate, hydrate…and then hydrate some more! It’s imperative to steer clear of synthetic oils such as mineral and/or petrolatum oil, as they further dehydrate hair. Also avoid products that contain drying alcohol and sulfates. Remember, hydration is essential in protecting your crowning glory and achieving the best summer hairstyles!

Two weeks ago in Tulsa, Oklahoma, seven-year-old Tiana Parker was forced to choose between her hair — adorable, short dreadlocks held back with a bow — and her school, which deemed her hairstyle “unacceptable.” Tulsa’s Deborah Brown Community School sent Tiana home in tears for not being presentable for having dreadlocks. Rather than cut off her hair, she decided to switch schools. I wish this could have ended differently, with all parties recognizing that was an opportunity to introduce a very important dialogue about awareness, differences, equality, tolerance and self-love; explaining the difference in hair textures while emphasizing the beauty in all textures! Schools offer a safe, welcoming climate for children and should focus on the promotion of understanding the culturally diverse world we live in.

As your children have headed back-to-school and are getting settled into new classes, it’s important to reinforce that they are beautiful – exactly as they are. There is no better time to initiate the discussion than when doing hair before school, you only need 5 minutes! Hydrate nourish and style your little one’s hair with these quick back-to-school styling tips; long enough to reinforce self-esteem but quick enough to get them out the door on time:

Wavy Hair Styling – buoyant, light curls

Locks Styling – maintain hydration

Straight Hair Styling – reduce dullness

Twists – fight dryness

Curly Wash n’ Wear – define curls

Coiled Wash n’ Wear – control frizz

What Would Your Hair Say?

The eyes have traditionally been the windows to the soul but apparently, our hair is. It’s everywhere, almost an epidemic – we are judged by our hair. We see it happen to celebrities and athletes daily in the age of social media. Stereotypes and preconceived notions cause strangers to make assumptions about us with one glance. Our hair is somehow connected to lifestyle, politics and morals in others eyes; who we are is decided instantly.

india arie quote

There is some truth that our hair may offer a glimpse into our personalities, a mere expression of a sliver of whom we truly are. Hair and identity are separate. We’re being prejudged on what they think our hair is saying! Whether natural, locked, relaxed, weaved, colored, long, short – we are subjected to it.

Instead of the world attaching definition to our hair, tell me….what would your hair say if it could talk? Join the conversation on Facebook and Twitter, using hashtag #ifmyhaircouldtalk.

Transitioning College Curl Girl

Right after high school graduation is when a young lady starts to find herself, usually starting with her hair. The summer before college is a popular time for big chops and transitioning; don’t send your curly girl off to school without being equipped with the right products.

Help her create a natural hair plan of how she will transition; she did the big chop and will be enhancing her curls, wearing braids, a weave, roller/rod/straw sets twist outs or possibly a combination of them all. What will remain consistent regardless of style will be products that moisturize, hydrate and nourish hair; try the Natural & Transitioning Hair Care Regimen. The focus is to ensure that your hair and scalp remain healthy and moisturized to promote healthy hair growth.

Start her off with what she needs; she can replenish her products online or at a local retailer. Check here for retail store locations and salons. She’ll thank you for it!

Conditioning 101

The common misconception is that women who wear their hair natural can just get up, shake it and go – not the case. Your hair needs that extra care to bring out the best in its natural texture, especially as it gets cooler. More conditioning and the scalp needs stimulation to restore the natural sebum balance on the outer layers.

condition hair 2

It’s interesting that many women purchase a cheap inferior quality shampoo and conditioner that does nothing good for their hair yet wonder why their curls feel dry, why their hair looks dull and why their hair is breaking?!? Quality conditioner has many functions, it:

  • Restores lost moisture
  • Seals the cuticle
  • Provides emolliency
  • Softens the hair
  • Make it easier to comb
  • Improves manageability
  • Strengthens the hair

condition hair

Jane Carter Solution Nutrient Replenishing Conditioner leaves your hair feeling soft, detangled and moisturized. This feeling will remain after rinsing the conditioner out, drying and styling your tresses. Our line also offers Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner, Hydrate Quench and Restore Moisture Mist.

For the sake of your coils, CONDITION YOUR HAIR….regularly.
