Mineral Oil is Bad for Hair
|
Mineral oil is one of a number of inexpensive byproducts that are made from petroleum. Sometimes referred to as paraffin oil, white mineral oil is composed of a blend of hydrocarbons that is not unlike that of petroleum jelly. The difference is that mineral oil is a liquid petrolatum, making it an ideal choice for a number of applications. Mineral oil coats the hair shaft so you may experience build up if you regularly use mineral oil. Mineral oil is also used as a preservative, since it doesn’t absorb moisture; for example as coating for water-sensitive materials. The preservative properties of mineral oil affect your hair the same way. If you continue to coat your hair and scalp with mineral oil based products you may experience excessive build-up that can lead to thinning hair since the hair shaft and scalp are not receiving the nutrients they need. The bottom line is that mineral oil is used in so many products because it is inexpensive. Your hair and scalp can tell the difference; treat them right. |
