Mineral oil is a common culprit that actually accumulates on the scalp, which in turn blocks the hair follicles, slowing hair growth. If it builds up on the hair itself, it attracts and holds dirt and residue, which makes the hair appear dull and unhealthy.

It is one of a number of inexpensive byproducts that are made from petroleum. Sometimes referred to as paraffin oil, white mineral oil is composed of a blend of hydrocarbons that is not unlike that of petroleum jelly. The difference is that mineral oil is a liquid petrolatum, making it an ideal choice for a number of applications…especially in hair products. Mineral oil like other oils is meant to lubricate the hair, and gives conditioners and moisturizers the “slip” in the black hair communities.

Mineral oil coats the hair shaft so a residue is inevitable. If you continue to coat your hair and scalp with mineral oil based products you may experience excessive build-up that can lead to thinning hair since the hair shaft and scalp are not receiving the nutrients they need.
