Q: I have very thick, curly hair that is frizzy and dry. You name it I have had it done in my battle to fight the frizz, chemical straightening, perming, Keratin Treatments, etc. – with no luck.

A: Most women with curls and coils have tried tirelessly to straighten their hair and ended up with a frizzy mess, to put it gently. We all know that frizz can be the plague of curly hair; whether you straighten your hair once a day, once a week or once in a blue moon, the most important thing to remember is to keep your locks well moisturized. Healthy hair frizzes less, grows faster and develops less split ends. Taking good care of your hair can make your job easier.

Natural Hold Spray Gel is your key to hydrated bouncy hair. It’s a water-based, alcohol free styling agent. Lightly mist hair with Natural Hold Spray Gel prior to heat styling. As you apply heat from your flat iron, the water in the product turns to steam and infuses moisture back into your hair while leaving it soft and springy with a light hold.

Heat protection, moisture infuser, and holding power all in one!

Is Curly Hair Still Judged?

There are some women that will not wear their natural hair texture; as in refuse to be caught dead flaunting naturally air-dried curls or waves. Despite the damaging effects of heat-styling and chemical treatments, there still seems to be a fascination with smooth, sleek hair — and women of all ethnicities and hair types seem to be willing to go to almost any length (or cost) to get straight, shiny locks. We must ask, is curly hair still judged?

Some think that straight hair is more professional, that it presents as being polished and uniform. Somehow, people perceive curls and waves as non-conforming; going against the grain and having an adversity to authority. I bet you didn’t even know your hair was “saying” all that; we are summed up in one strand of hair!

As absurd as it may sound, I realize that women with textured hair tend to have moments of doubt. Have you experienced going into a job interview or meeting nervous because your hair was acting particularly frizzy that day? Or contemplated straightening your coils for a first date? Even though hair should be the last thing judged, we all know – it happens. The “norm” is the opposite of what some are embracing, even though it’s what naturally grows from their scalps. Ironic.

What are your concerns regarding how you are perceived with curly or wavy hair?

The Air Dry Challenge

Blowing out your coif isn’t the only way to create a voluminous, gorgeous look, contrary to popular belief. Blowout focused hair salons are the rave across the country; an alternative to the traditional salon as it only offers blowouts – you’re in and you’re out with weightless, shiny, straight hair. Convenience starts at getting your hair done for a black-tie dinner or special event, to biweekly visits, to a weekly blowout and then BAM…you find yourself taking that trip to the blowout bar a few times a week! (yikes) That starts to add up at a starting price of $40 a visit…

If you want to lay off the heat or if you just don’t feel like blow drying your locks, you can still score a stylish style by air drying your hair. Save yourself some money and save your hair the damage from heat styling. I challenge you embrace your natural texture – air dry your hair. Enhance your texture with these styling tips:

I challenge you to a week of air drying your hair. Who’s in?!

Ready, set, air-dry!

Silicone-Free Shine

Jane Carter Solution has been specifically formulated for dry hair, regardless of texture or ethnicity. These quality products cleanse, condition and nourish hair - kinky hair, curly hair, straight, relaxed, color treated and locked hair. We have recently added a key finishing product to our Hydrate line; Seal & Shine adds incredible shine and reduces dryness.

Shiny Hair Collage

This light, water-soluble, silicone free shine spray moisturizes, strengthens and protects without weighing down or drying out hair. Silicones provide the false appearance of a healed cuticle’ over time, tresses become brittle and further prone to frizz – creating a damaging and dehydrating cycle. Seal & Shine’s anti-humidity formula helps to control and reduce frizz, creating manageable hair with shine!

Can be used three ways:

  1. Cocktail with Hydrate Quench to seal in essential fatty acids and protein
  2. Spray directly onto hair or into the palm of hands to distribute onto hair as a finishing glossifier
  3. Hydrate parched skin!

You Can Touch My Hair

People, people everywhere! A large number of people gathered in New York City’s Union Square Park on last Saturday to touch black women’s hair. It was all part of a two-day “interactive public art exhibit,” titled “You Can Touch My Hair”.

touch my hair

Three black women stood in Union Square with signs welcoming strangers to come feel. The women had different hair types: locs, straightened hair and a blown-out afro. The purpose is to explore the “tactile fascination with black hair” by feeling the hair of black women. Un-ruly.com, who organized the event, describes it as a public art exhibit “where strangers from all walks of life will have the welcomed opportunity to touch various textures of black hair”.

We have two questions:

  1. What are your thoughts on the experiment?
  2. Would you participate and allow strangers to touch your hair?

Meet me on Facebook and Twitter for the discussion.
