National Mammography Day…Get Up, Out, and Screened

The third Friday in October of each year is National Mammography Day. On this day, or throughout October, radiologists provide free or discounted screening mammograms. The event is sponsored by the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month organization, which is celebrating 25 years of service this month. The initiative seeks to encourage millions of women – especially older women and those in underserved communities – to receive a mammogram and become empowered in the fight against breast cancer.

On this day, which is TODAY, mammogram facilities that would normally charge full price will provide free or low-cost exams…some will even be extending the free test to other days. Click here to search for free and low-cost screenings in your state.

Get up, out, and screened today!

Washing Your Locs Between Salon Appointments

What you’ll need:

Shampoo

Use a residue-free product to clean your locks. The frequency with which you wash your locks will depend on your lifestyle. If you’re more active than most, then you’ll need to consider washing your hair more often to reduce the build-up that sweat can produce on your scalp. If you’re less active, your dreadlock maintenance routine shouldn’t have to include washing your
hair more than weekly.

After the hair is saturated with water, pour shampoo on the scalp and continue down the length of the locs. Massage the entire scalp and scrub the locs for several minutes (if they are long enough). Rinse well and repeat.

Condition
Much debated in the dreadlocks community, conditioning your hair restores your locks from the root and can correct surface damage. After your final shampoo, condition your locs and cover with a plastic cap for 5 minutes. Rinse very well.

Moisturize
Moisturize the hair and scalp with a nourishing loc butter, be sure to evenly distribute the product.

Retwist and style as usual.

Enisha Brewster, Etta in the remake of "Footloose", attended the premiere of the film at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles on October 3, 2011. Extremely excited to walk the red carpet of her first big movie premiere, Enisha rocked a fabulous twist-out with some playful bangs…she looked STUNNING - fancy free curls up and down the red carpet!

  1. Clean Hair – Apply Jane Carter Solution Revitalizing Leave-in Conditioner to freshly washed hair.
  2. Curling Product– Liberally apply Jane Carter Solution Curl Defining Cream to each section of hair from root to tip. It’s important not to neglect the ends because fuzzy ends will ruin a great style!
  3. Twist - Make sure the twists are smooth and uniform; remember to leave a section across the front for the bangs.
  4. Dry - Air dry or use a hooded dryer to set the twists.
  5. Finish & Shine - Add a bit of Jane Carter Solution Nourish & Shine to fingers and carefully untwist each section. Gently pull the twist straight out and allow the sections to virtually create themselves, this will help avoid creating any additional frizz.

Live in the Moment

“Don’t get stuck in the future or the past…life is all about the journey.” –unknown

So many of us are so caught up with our daily life routine that we fail to appreciate the quality of our moment-to-moment life. The power of NOW is undeniable. You can choose to be completely present-minded, enjoying every moment of right now, second after second, minute after minute. You can’t feel alive in the past and you can’t feel alive in the future; you can only feel alive right now, in this moment.

The past will never, ever change. What’s done is done, no matter how hard you wish or how much you think about it. Live and learn, life is a journey and the journey is the destination.

But this moment right now…it’s priceless.
