Is Curly Hair Still Judged?

There are some women that will not wear their natural hair texture; as in refuse to be caught dead flaunting naturally air-dried curls or waves. Despite the damaging effects of heat-styling and chemical treatments, there still seems to be a fascination with smooth, sleek hair — and women of all ethnicities and hair types seem to be willing to go to almost any length (or cost) to get straight, shiny locks. We must ask, is curly hair still judged?

Some think that straight hair is more professional, that it presents as being polished and uniform. Somehow, people perceive curls and waves as non-conforming; going against the grain and having an adversity to authority. I bet you didn’t even know your hair was “saying” all that; we are summed up in one strand of hair!

As absurd as it may sound, I realize that women with textured hair tend to have moments of doubt. Have you experienced going into a job interview or meeting nervous because your hair was acting particularly frizzy that day? Or contemplated straightening your coils for a first date? Even though hair should be the last thing judged, we all know – it happens. The “norm” is the opposite of what some are embracing, even though it’s what naturally grows from their scalps. Ironic.

What are your concerns regarding how you are perceived with curly or wavy hair?

Personal Development is an Inside Job

Recently I have been reviewing and updating my personal goals; making edits to my Personal Growth Plan to reflect my life and location on my journey. Are you familiar?

growth strategy

A personal growth plan is most importantly built upon the belief that personal development is our own personal responsibility and we need to intentionally plan our growth. The idea is to have a plan that outlines the areas in our lives that require personal development – in any area of your life. The great part about creating the plan is its ability to keep you focused amongst the alerts and vibrations of calls, text messages, emails and notifications of “likes.”

To start:

  • Identify and decide on the key areas of your life that you would like to further develop
  • Find resources for development: books, websites, seminars, support groups, etc.
  • Dedicate time daily towards your personal development
  • Connect with others whom are developed in the areas you are working on; find a mentor
  • Apply what you have learned in order to initiate growth.

Please don’t panic at the statement “personal development”; that phrase tends to frighten people by weighing heavily on them. Have no fear; for successful personal development, you need exactly two conditions:

  1. You want to change something about your life
  2. You’re not happy with the results you got so far

That’s it.

Remember, your life is too short and too significant to not live it to your fullest potential!

Braids, Braids Everywhere

A big trend in fall and winter are box braids; they were everywhere during Fashion Week and continue to be a fashion must-have. There are many different styles of braids - box braids, micro-braids, fishtail braids, waterfall braids – they look fierce, gives your hair a streamlined and sleek appearance. Box braids are a great protective style, all year long. They provide refuge from having to battle it out with the flat iron or attempting to create the perfect curls; an instant polished, classy look!

box braids

It’s a common misconception that braids cannot be washed without slippage…some men and women go two months without washing their scalp! This leads to a build-up of dirt and sebum which clogs hair follicles resulting in dry, flakey scalp. You simply can maintain good hair and scalp health under these conditions.

  1. Apply Scalp Renew pre-shampoo treatment to exfoliate and detoxify the scalp of sebum and debris.
  2. Dilute Creamy Conditioning Cleanser in a spray bottle filled with water.
  3. Mist scalp and braids; root to tip.
  4. Rinse thoroughly.
  5. Mist hair with Hydrate Quench.
  6. Apply Scalp Nourishing Serum to sooth and hydrate scalp; a little goes a long way.
  7. Air dry or sit under hooded dryer.
  8. Moisturize hair with Nourish & Shine if needed after dry.

Mist hair daily with for rehydration with Quench and use a small amount of Scalp Nourishing Serum into your scalp every other day to combat dryness and maintain scalp health.

Box braids can make for a really great low maintenance protective style. In this style you can give your hair a break and some time away to really grow and flourish, if hair growth is one of your goals.

Style Challenges: Locked Hair

It’s true that lock maintenance is a low-key affair…when it comes to styling at least. There are a few more components to consider in a good hair care regimen that will keep your hair and scalp moisturized and your locks free of build-up and lint. The components are not harder, just different; the difference will show in your locks as they grow healthier and shinier than ever before!

locks (1)locks 1

An irregular hair care routine or following the wrong regimen can result in dull-looking locks or lead to scalp problems like having an ever-present itchy feeling and excessive lock dandruff. What’s the condition of your hair; looking to turn around the health of your locks? We asked award winning Master Lock Stylist, Thando Kafele, about the importance of scalp health:

A flower needs healthy soil to grow, just as the basis of healthy hair is determined by good scalp care…and a healthy scalp is the foundation to long, luxurious locks. That’s why the integrity of the scalp is essential! Jane Carter Solution Scalp Renew is a pre-shampoo treatment used to exfoliate the scalp and remove build up, toxins and sebum from the scalp. Jane Carter Solution Scalp Nourishing Serum delivers the proper nutrients needed to create and maintain a healthy scalp, eliminating dryness and itching. It’s the perfect scalp finishing product before styling.”

Men’s Corner: Treating Male Pattern Baldness

A full head of hair is associated with strength, virility and power from a male perspective. Unfortunately it’s out of our control as male-pattern baldness is controlled genetically and seems to be passed down predominantly on the mother’s side; if your maternal grandfather or uncles are bald, you might lose your hair too. The process can begin at any time from puberty but most often comes on around 30; by 50, half of all men have lost some hair.

70% of men suffer from male-pattern baldness. I’m not referring to a bit of hairline receding but diminishing hair in the crown are. This is a warning sign; don’t wait until you are fully bald, the fight is over then. The time to act is at the first sign on thinning! Some want an alternative to medication due to possible allergic skin reactions and the risk of systemic effects due to the absorption through the scalp.

Restore_Grow_great_hair

We have an effective alternative that is naturally derived; Jane Carter Solution Restore Grow Great Hair stimulates faster, healthier hair growth. Apply directly to the scalp twice daily, to stimulate blood flow and distribute nutrients to the hair follicle and detoxify scalp. Grow Great Hair will:

  • Stimulate collagen to revitalize hair
  • Elongate hair’s growth stage
  • Inhibit DHT
  • Increase hair thickness
  • Reduce the appearance of hair thinning

Purchase before October 31st and receive 25% OFF Grow Great Hair using code GGHAIR.

Remember, the general rule of thumb is that hair can be thickened anywhere it is still growing…it’s all about the hair care regimen you follow!
