Iconic Women

Giving good hair is a powerful thing! Long hair, short hair, colored hair, weaved hair, shaved hair – don’t care. These ladies are not only known for making headlines and careers, but they have influenced our culture at some time, coiffures that have inspired envy and imitation over the past century. These women unwittingly started pop culture history’s most memorable hair trends with their iconic hairstyles, past and present. Some of these fashionable hairdo’s have faded into obscurity, others have crept back into relevance. Over time style has evolved, thus creating several fashion changing hairstyles; only a few hairstyles become coveted, it takes a woman who truly ‘owns’ a look to make it iconic. At the time it might have felt they were being outlandish, provocative, or that they were pushing buttons but really they just knew who they were and didn’t apologize for it.

One of the beauty hurdles we obsess over is trying to find that perfect hairstyle that make us look (and feel) fantastic! Framing the face, hair is a huge part of our appearance; changing our hair is one of the easiest ways to alter our image, but keeping it the same can cement your signature style. The icons of beauty have stuck by their own looks and found comfort in being themselves. Finding your individual style and being happy with it is such a positive affirmation, especially when individuality tends to get lost in this day and age.

We at Jane Carter Solution promote individuality in women and support all women accepting their hair texture! Ask yourself:

Do I have a signature style?

Am I presenting myself and my hair in a way that’s true to who I really am?

Does my hair make me feel beautiful and empowered?

Let the journey to finding your iconic style start now!

The key to pulling off this look? Don’t force it, just rock it. You don’t want to over style, there’s no need. The trick is to play with your hair to achieve texture; twisting, scrunching, smoothing and defining individual sections. Use Jane Carter Solution Curl Defining Cream’s unique formula provides texture with volume and movement. It’s not sticky and is easy to restyle once applied. Ideal for spiking short and medium hair, you can finger style for the ultimate control.

  1. Apply Curl Defining Cream to dry hair; use a generous amount and spike hair from front to back.
  2. Allow to air dry or use a blow dryer.
  3. Spritz with Natural Hold Spray Gel for a firm hold to survive the activities of the day.

Remember, short crops tend to start growing out within a month. To avoid having to visit the salon frequently to maintain the shape, ask your stylist to add texture to your ends so they aren’t as blunt.

Rock that cut, girl!

Women of all ages gathered at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, NJ for the annual Black Girls Rock Awards. Tightly coiled hair is prone to shrinkage, susceptible to dryness and vulnerable to frizz; proper nourishment and thorough conditioning is critical when styling and cleansing. Keeping hair moisturized and using styling products that will lock the natural curl pattern into hair without encouraging any frizz is the answer! Follow these tips to recreate her defined coils…

  • While hair is wet, add a liberal amount of Wrap & Roll; pull it through to the ends of hair.
  • Section hair, apply a generous amount of Curl Defining Cream through the hair and finger comb.
  • For added shine and to seal in moisture use a pea sized amount of Nourish & Shine as a finisher.

Perfectly defined curls that are moisturized and free of frizz!

The New York mayoral race is well underway with advocate-turned-candidate Bill de Blasio campaigning hard…with his 15 year old son, Dante, starring in his television ad. Dante’s words are real as he articulates why his father is the best choice for the city of New York. What has overshadowed the message? His afro.

dante de Blasio

In an interview regarding his hair; Dante spoke of his hair care regimen which includes picking it out every day, washing it weekly and getting it trimmed monthly. A writer for Talking Points Memo, tweeted Dante’s parents in response to their son’s interview:

@deBlasioNYC and @Chirlane should probably encourage Dante to give his hair more than a weekly washing”; “I’m assuming he showers more than weekly and doesn’t shampoo but the article wasn’t too precise.”

Dante’s mother, Chirlane McCray, replied:

“Walker obviously knows little, if anything, about African American hair care!”

The afro has taken over; “Dante de Blasio afro” is an auto-fill option in Google! We’ve seen afros before, both large and small. Is his afro a powerful political statement; do the words in the advertisement make a stronger impression on voters coming from a biracial teen with cool hair than they would coming from a middle-aged white man from Brooklyn? Or is Dante just a young man embracing his natural texture as he states he’s been cultivating his afro since the third grade?

Dante’s long-term impact remains to be seen, but hair matters in politics – clearly. What do you think?
