How Old is Your Hair?
| Our hair ages, just as we do. Of course most people identify hair aging with it turning grey and/or white but there can be changes in the texture and in density. Don’t equate your chronological age, you can be a thirty year old woman who has fifty year old hair – it happens!
Many of the factors that contribute to prematurely aging hair are directly related to lifestyle and can be prevented.
In response to stressful stimuli, your body turns on its biological response releasing chemicals and hormones. Stress increases testosterone levels, which causes the head to produce less hair, thus the hair begins to thin and shed. Keep stress levels to a minimum professionally and personally!
Practices such as skipping meals lead to decreased energy in hair follicles, which results in the depletion of hair protein cells. Inadequate protein leads to thinning hair, breakage and split ends. There is no secret that water consumption is important as well, it flushes out toxins in the body.
Relaxers and color application pokes holes in the hair shaft and prolonged use may cause irreversible damage and leaving hair lifeless and dull.
Excessive heat exposure will inevitably wear down the hair shaft causing coils to age. Heat breaks down the hydrogen bonds resulting in significant loss of moisture. Loss of moisture results in dry hair prone to breakage. What changes will you make to slow down your hair’s aging process? |
