Where Do We Draw the Line?

WHOA! The internet is on fire still about Solange’s hair critics; bashing her in blog comments for everything from her love of faux curls to the fact that she favors and typically wears softer, less defined styles. She took to Twitter almost 2 weeks ago to defend herself but there seems to be no end to the attack on her appreciating her curls in a less enhanced state or for her whipping a weave back-and-forth when the feeling hits!

Where do we draw the line in our natural hair community?

What concerns me is the slight aroma of “elitism”. The same elitism that most in the natural hair community have faced professionally and/or personally…the dirty cycle of stifling freedom of expression continues.

We should be embracing the belief that all women have the right to wear, style and rock the hell out of their in their way! Don’t fall into the trap of dividing our own community, of dividing ourselves as women, of creating a battle that doesn’t need to exist.

Love your hair and the hair of every woman on this Earth; however they choose to present it!

Opportunities for Growth

“The real gift of challenge is WHO you become by facing it.”

What I do know is that many of us spend the majority of our lives not only living in fear, but allowing it to dictate the terms of what we call life. Fear certainly has the potential to hold you back, being scared isn’t always as bad as it may seem. In fact, I believe that being scared is an important component of growth and essential in expressing your gifts to the world. Being scared simply means there are more paths you need to explore.

As you mature and experience new paths your definition of fear will continue to change. With fear generally comes uncertainty, and there’s something about uncertainty that we are often attracted to. Overcoming a personal battle or struggle can really take life to the next level. Without fear your life becomes a boring sitcom rerun.

If you face your fears rather than run from them, your perspective on what you can and can’t handle will change. You will change, which is exactly the point!

The Natural Hair Police

As you may already know, Solange Knowles is one of our fav curly hair loving celebrities! She’s always noticed for her fabulous frocks and natural hair – two of these reason we adore her at JCS.
But it seems that she has also been criticized by the natural hair police! Comments following a blog post about her, by fellow natural hair women, alluded to her hair looking “unkept and requires combing”. Apparently that was her limit and she took to Twitter to set the record straight…well, set it straight while embracing her natural texture.

“I’m only going to say a few things. I cut my hair ALL off 4 times in my life all for very different reasons….I only reiterate this because this is nothing new for me. This 4th time did not define me, just as it had not the previous 3 times. I’ve never painted myself as a team natural vice president. I don’t know the lingo and I don’t sleep with a satin cap. All I’m saying is, my hair is not very important to
me…so I don’t encourage it to be important to you.”

Well, she said a mouthful! I must agree, every woman has the right for the world to stay out of her scalp – period.

Steaming…Just Do It!

Does your hair need additional moisture? Are you steaming? How often do you steam?
Not sure what steaming is? Let me explain! Steaming is simply taking your regular conditioner and amplifying the results…with steam. It opens the follicles of your hair and allows your conditioner to penetrate deeper than just putting conditioner on. This provides extra nourishment to your strands.

Hot towel steaming is the easiest of all steaming methods unless you have invested in a steamer. Start by liberally applying Jane Carter Solution Nutrient Revitalizing Conditioner to your hair. Next, place a small towel or towel turban in a bowl of water and put in the microwave. Make sure it’s not too hot to touch but hot enough to allow your conditioner to penetrate deeply. Wring out the towel, wrap around your head and cover with a plastic shower cap. Sit for 15-20 minutes and rinse.

You have officially steamed! How does it feel?
