Radical Curls
The sun is shining and the temperature is rising, spring is here and I can almost taste summer - hot days, sultry nights, stickiness in the air…and unruly coils. (eeeek!) What is the perfect style to combat humidity and sweltering temperatures? Rod and straw sets.
Rod and straw sets are extremely low maintenance hairstyles; it gives your hair a break from the regular styling, combing and brushing manipulation your hair encounters from daily styling. They are also easier on weak or compromised edges than braided and tension producing styles. Sets also last longer than braid and twist outs with minimal daily maintenance. Follow these tips to set your hair and for a daily rod/straw set regimen:
- wash and condition hair with your favorite Jane Carter Solution products
- mist hair with Hydrate Quench to lock in moisture and help combat frizz
- Saturate hair with Natural Twist Out Foam (mix with Condition & Sculpt for a firmer hold)
- Remove rods, spritz with Hydrate Seal & Shine and finger through curls
To maintain, each morning re-coil curls with a bit of Nourish & Shine on your fingers, as needed.
Fluff and go!

You might care for your hair well during the daytime hours, but you might not give enough thought to caring for your hair while asleep. For most women of color, tying up our hair before bed is a necessary task. Naturally textured hair is already prone to tangles and leaving it unarmed at night, basically gorilla style, is inviting the possibility of even more tangles. While sleeping, you toss, you turn, and it is likely that your hair will get matted and tangled in the process. Again, leading to more sustained damage. Wrapping your hair at night can help your hair to retain moisture and minimize breakage!

Pretty in Purple, Quvenzhane topped of her ensemble with a gem studded purple flower to accent her high ponytail. Her hair looked healthy and shiny; African-American natural hair requires extra attention to maintain its beauty, even with children. MOISTURE is essential, it is the only way!
Maintenance is an important factor in having healthy locks. Part of loc maintenance is the regular re-twisting as your hair grows; in order to ensure hair continues to lock, new growth must be twisted. Regular maintenance will ensure that your locks are clean and free of dust, hydrated and that you scalp remains moisturized. Your lifestyle and hair type will determine the frequency in which you maintain your hair.
