The Power of Shea Butter

The fat of the nut of the African Shea tree (vitellaria paradoxa) is the source of Shea butter. The traditional use of the butter is to reduce the appearance of fine lines, scars and stretch marks, and to ease a variety of skin irritations, such as psoriasis, eczema and sunburn. Shea butter is a rich source of moisture, vitamins and fat for your skin and hair. In its natural state, shea butter is a thick, yellowish butter that liquefies at body temperature. Natural anti-inflammatory properties make it a nourishing choice for the scalp, helping to improve your hair growth and health.

Q: I have very thick, curly hair that is frizzy and dry. You name it I have had it done in my battle to fight the frizz, chemical straightening, perming, Keratin Treatments, etc. – with no luck.

straight hair 1

A: Most women with curls and coils have tried tirelessly to straighten their hair and ended up with a frizzy mess, to put it gently. We all know that frizz can be the plague of curly hair; whether you straighten your hair once a day, once a week or once in a blue moon, the most important thing to remember is to keep your locks well moisturized. Healthy hair frizzes less, grows faster and develops less split ends. Taking good care of your hair can make your job easier.

Natural Hold Spray Gel is your key to hydrated bouncy hair. It’s a water-based, alcohol free styling agent. Lightly mist hair with Natural Hold Spray Gel prior to heat styling. As you apply heat from your flat iron, the water in the product turns to steam and infuses moisture back into your hair while leaving it soft and springy with a light hold.

Heat protection, moisture infuser, and holding power all in one!

Avoid Security Shenanigans

Surviving airport security is a traveler’s rite of passage: shuffling through the line, removing your shoes, stripping off all accessories and placing your laptop in a separate bin in preparation for scanning. The goal is to make it through this final step of security with no hiccups, which is all determined by what is in your carry on. There are 3 components to sashaying through TSA quickly – trust me, I am an expert at traveling…and hair care! *wink*

Trave Kit

  1. Pack Strategically
No one wants their personal belongings to be hand inspected, this happens when item are unable to clearly be identified via x-ray scanning. Avoid this by packing strategically in layers; layer your electronics and beauty appliances together in a layer between your clothing. This will keep the wires from becoming one tangled, random mess that may resemble some sort of bomb…take the time to neatly pack.
  2. The Liquid Lingo
Here is the breakdown: any liquid should be kept in a 3.4-ounce bottle or smaller; you’re only allowed as many bottles as can fit in one quart-size, clear Ziplock bag or clear pouch. Bypass the time and aggravation of purchasing small empty containers to fill with product from your beauty bar, our Jane Carter Solution Travel Kit is all you need to take care of your hair during your Holiday travels. It includes:

    1. Moisture Nourishing Shampoo 2 oz.
    2. Hair Nourishing Serum ampule
    3. Hair Nourishing Cream .25 oz.
    4. Scalp Nourishing Serum ampule
    5. Nutrient Replenishing Conditioner 2 oz.
    6. Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner 2 oz.
    7. Condition & Sculpt 2 oz.
    8. Wrap & Roll 2 oz.
    9. Nourish & Shine 1 oz.

Layer your Travel Kit at the top on your bag along with any other beauty products you have packed.

  3. Checkpoint Approved
Save time by investing in a checkpoint approved laptop. To help streamline the security process and better protect laptops, TSA recently encouraged manufacturers to design bags that will produce a clear and unobstructed image of the laptop when undergoing X-ray screening, allowing laptops to remain in bags for screening.

You’ll breeze through security… don’t forget your shoes!

Porosity Problems?

Porosity. Let’s talk…porosity refers to how well your hair is able to absorb and hold moisture, aka water. All hair is naturally porous and somewhat permeable to water; it’s determined by the condition of your hair cuticle. Normal porosity hair knows when to take in moisture and how to hold onto it as well.

porosity

Porosity can be affected by external factors causing damage to the cuticle – either remaining closed and not retaining moisture or remaining open and letting moisture out as quickly as it is accepted. So what exactly damages the cuticles in those ways?

  1. mechanical and heat abuse from combs, brushes, and heat styling tools
  2. excessive sun exposure
  3. over-processing from chemical relaxers and permanent colors
  4. continued use of sodium lauryl or ammonium lauryl sulfate-rich shampoos

Be proactive in avoiding cuticle damage by using the correct products to protect and hydrate!

You can reduce heat damage (#1) by using Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner; it’s lightweight formula allows you to reduce the temperature when flat-ironing or blow drying your hair, the bonus - it also doubles as a sun screen (#2).

Soothe over-processed hair (#3) with the Jojoba and Henna essential oils in Restore Creamy Conditioning Cleanser and rebuild strength with complex Amino Acid and Silk protein in Restore Moisture Mist.

Discontinue the use of your sulfate shampoo (#4) and replace it with Hydrating Invigorating Shampoo SLS-Free; the humectants employed during washing help your hair hold more moisture, which is always a benefit.

Knowing your hair’s porosity can help you choose the right products to keep your hair well-moisturized, supple, strong and shiny. Now you’re in the know and armed with suggestions for the best products for your tresses!

Terrific Twist-Out Tips

Twist-outs are one of many hairstyle options one can do to maintain healthy hair. It requires no heat usage, thus preventing heat damage. It can be worn for days at a time, therefore requiring little mechanical manipulation to our tresses. With twist-outs there is no tension on the scalp, and thus no damage to the hair follicle. What’s more? It is a cute hairstyle for any length of natural hair! Here are 3 tips to help your twist-outs last longer…with the use of Jane Carter Solution Natural Twist Out Foam:

twist out

  • Wear smaller twists to make them last longer.

For some naturals, twisting down to the very ends of the hair can lead to twist-outs with frizzy ends. An alternative method is to twist until just before you reach the ends of your hair and then coil these ends around your finger.

  • Twist hair when 25% dry.

Twisting on dry hair will produce a twist-out that only lasts for a short period; it’s important to twist on wet or damp hair in order to achieve optimal definition and a longer lasting style. Avoid twisting on hair that is 100% wet; fully wet hair is more prone to breakage via tension while twisting.

  • Protect your hair during your beauty sleep.

Minimize frizz by using a satin bonnet; for those with medium to long hair, put your twist-out into 10-12 big twists and cover with a satin bonnet. In the morning undo the big twists and fluff into your style. For those with shorter hair, there is no need to re-twist prior to bedtime. Simply cover with a satin bonnet; in the morning, remove the bonnet and fluff your hair.

You can enhance your curl definition by mixing Jane Carter Solution Curl Defining Cream to the Natural Twist Out Foam. Finish with Nourish & Shine for a boost of moisture and shine.

Sleek & Chic Hair

Relaxed hair doesn’t have to feel dry and brittle to the touch! Too often relaxing gets the shaft, mainly because of the age-old assumption that it’s too damaging. Contrary to popular belief, you can have perfectly healthy, strong hair with a perm - as long as you know how to properly care for your chemically straightened hair. All you ladies with sleek and chic manes, we’ve got the products you need to maintain moisture and shine.

short relaxed

Relaxed hair requires lots of moisture and products for heal protection and to seal cuticle. These three tips are essential in hydrating relaxed hair:

  1. Apply Hair Nourishing Cream to wet hair after washing and conditioning hair; will provide heat protection from blow drying and prepare hair for flat ironing.
  2. Once hair is dry, mist each section of hair with Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner to protect hair from curling or flat ironing; temperature no higher than 350 degrees.
  3. During styling, add a few drops of Hair Nourishing Serum to hair as a finisher; add shine, seals cuticle and eliminates fly-a-ways.

You may also want to add a humidifier to your bedroom to combat the drying effects of indoor heat. For additional tips and product suggestions, visit our Chemically Straightened Hair page.
