A Moment in Black History: Tuskegee Airmen

The 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group of the US Army Air Corps is also known as the Tuskegee Airmen. They were determined young men who enlisted to become America’s first black military airmen, at a time when there were many people who thought that black men lacked intelligence, skill, courage, and patriotism.

There were 996 original Airmen which included pilots, bombardiers, and navigators from across the country. They were trained at the Tuskegee Army Air Field in Tuskegee, Alabama starting in 1941 which was a replica of already-existing airfields reserved for training "white" pilots. The Army Air Force created the bomber unit after pressure from the NAACP and other civil rights organizations.

The Tuskegee Airman had an outstanding record of accomplishments despite the humiliation and indignation caused by frequent experience of racism and bigotry…the airmen fought two wars bravely - one against a military force overseas and the other against racism at home and abroad.
