Hispanic Heritage Month ~ September 15 – October 15th

September 15th marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, the anniversary of independence for five Latin American Countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico declared its independence on September 16th, followed by Chile on September 18th.

The first National Hispanic Heritage Week was proclaimed by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968, the observance was expanded in 1988 to allow for a month long event celebrating the culture and traditions of those who trace their heritage from Spain, Mexico, Central and South America as well as the Caribbean.
