Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway!
|
"Fearlessness is not the absence of fear. It’s being able to embrace our fear…and then to leap anyway.” Fear is an instinct built into the human operating system. It is there as a primal instinct to tell us we need to respond to a situation to protect ourselves. Most of us respond to the uncomfortable feeling of fear by retreating, by becoming reasonable, or by running away when in fact there is not really any threat at all. In doing that, we often lose the opportunity to grow and learn to embrace the feeling of fear and ‘do it anyway”. If we could just learn to reprogram our thoughts and ask ourselves what is there really to be afraid of? Is there a physical threat here? What’s the worst that can happen? We can then circumvent that uncomfortable emotional response and move towards the thing, object or event that scares us the most. Then and only then can we acknowledge that fear is a primal instinct not always grounded in reality. There is always victory on the other side of discomfort if you are willing to walk through the emotion.
